The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education enhances your ability to learn healthy patterns of moving, feeling, and thinking. It uses gentle compression, rolling and stretching in unique sequences to find and release deep-seated physical and emotional patterns causing tension and pain. It improves communication and control of muscles, joints, balance, hearing and vision.
You are fully clothed during a Feldenkrais session to support your comfort and sense of safety. It is recommended that you wear comfortable unrestricted clothing.
Most of us have been injured or had a debilitating illness at least once in our life. And with each trauma, the body automatically tightens and moves more cautiously to avoid more pain. What you may not know is that those new ways of moving stay ‘turned on’ long after the injury. Over time, these injury-acquired habits actually increase your likelihood of more pain and injury.
By improving the way your individual parts work together you will have fewer injuries and recover faster and more fully. The therapist ‘draws the dots’ involved in healthy movement patterns and your brain automatically ‘connects the dots’ to correct your faulty painful movements. The almost miraculous result is smoother, more comfortable movement.
The Feldenkrais Method® is named after its founder, Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904–1984), an internationally recognized physicist, engineer and master of Judo. His method of retraining the brain and body made him one of the early pioneers in the field of neuroscience. And popular neuroscientist Dr. Norman Doidge, MD, describes Dr. Feldenkrais as the ‘Father of Neuroscience’ in his best selling book, The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity.
The Feldenkrais Method® is offered in two formats:
With 1-to-1 sessions in the clinic you are on a low table or chair while the therapist gently moves your body in different ways. You may be asked to make small, specific movements to help your brain find and change the areas of unconscious muscle tension that make your movements inefficient and painful.
With live online Awareness Through Movement® group lessons, you are verbally guided through a sequence of gentle brain-awakening movements. Classes take place on your floor, bed, and chair, or while standing. Click Book Now to see what group classes are currently available.
